5 Ways to Lead by Example

We all adore our Leaders who inspire us, whom we want to be like, whom we would follow to the end of the earth, and whom we would do anything for.

To me, leading by example is behaving in a way others want to follow. Whether it’s at home, or in the workplace, others are noticing your behaviours and choosing whether your actions inspire them or not.

Where are you leading by example? Is it for your family at home or work colleagues? Maybe both?

The great news is anyone has the potential to “lead by example” Choosing to invest time and energy to improve your leadership skills will become an asset, so here are a few tips to practise ‘Leading by Example’ at work:

1. LISTEN
– Two ears, one mouth for a reason! As leaders, sometimes we are so consumed with providing direction, that we forget to stop and be curious. There is so much knowledge in your team. Encourage them to speak.

2. OWN YOUR MISTAKES – A great leader becomes human when acknowledging their failures. Show your team, that you’re just like them. Better yet, discuss with the team how these failures can be turned into learning and growth.

3. TRUST YOUR TEAM – Communicate the result you expect from your team. Set a timeframe, then step back and allow them to get on with their job. You hired them, now show them how much you believe in them.

4. GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY – Roll your sleeves up and get in the trenches alongside your team. Whatever you’re prepared to do, they will perform twice as well to show you how amazing they are. Be proud of them.

5. REMEMBER, WE WERE ALL BORN NAKED – Leave your ego at the door. Everyone is as worthy as the other. I can guarantee, the security guard or forklift driver will know more about what’s going on in your business than you! Show respect and you will be respected.

Leadership that focuses on growth, trust, understanding, commitment, and respect creates a thriving culture. Employees follow Leaders.

‘Leading by Example’ is a conscious choice. Where are you heading with your team? Where do you want them to be?
